The Tsuchiura Kyodo General Hospital was designed with the aim of providing highly advanced medical care and serving neighborhoods as the region’s core hospital open to the local community. With an inpatient ward on each floor consisting of four nursing units, the hospital was intentionally built low. Combined with its welcoming exterior, the building blends into the beautiful surrounding scenery, overlooking Lake Kasumigaura and Mount Tsukuba. The interior is centered around the “hospital street” running from east to west while emphasizing organic linkages between various functions, making it easier for visitors and staff to orient themselves. A civic plaza and several other places for people to gather are offered, in addition to the central hall and outpatient waiting room. Adorning the entire building with artwork depicting Tsuchiura’s natural beauty, we endeavored to create a space frequented by local residents. Besides giving consideration to resource and energy conservation, the hospital has a seismically isolated structure and large backup generators, ensuring that business continuity planning measures are in place with preparedness for an earthquake in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
